Aloha Kakou,
Pu`uhonua Kanahele, the Nation's Head of State, is still
being held in prison without bail by federal authorities,
after the Ninth Circuit Court in San Francisco denied his
appeal in mid-September, in a split decision (one judge
dissented on a panel of three).
Kanahele's trial, which was originally scheduled for Oct. 3,
has been postponed by the court until Oct. 11, and perhaps
later.
Updated information, including news articles (from Hawaii
and elsewhere), letters of support, letters to the editors,
and related information is available at:

HO`IKE I KA PONO - Witness for Justice
On August 31, over 40 church and community leaders visited
the village of Pu`uhonua O Waimanalo, as the first "Witness
for Justice" exposure tour, to learn first-hand about the
imprisonment of Kanahele, and the goals of the Nation of
Hawaii.
This coalition has drafted a statement calling for the
release of Kanahele, and is organizing a petition campaign
to gather signatures on Kanahele's behalf and to raise
awareness regarding this injustice, and also to seek support
for the Kanaka Legal Defense Fund (see below).
A second Witness for Justice tour of the Waimanalo village
is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 11 am to 2 pm.
KANAKA LEGAL DEFENSE FUND
A newly formed independent legal defense fund has been
established in coordination with the Hawaii Ecumenical
Coalition to support legal and litigation issues which are
not covered by more traditional legal services or agencies,
such as Kanahele's case. Your contributions are needed!
Checks can be made out to the Kanaka Legal Defense Fund, and
can be specified to support Kanahele's case. Contact the
HEC office (845-9501) for more information, or send
contributions directly to 766 N. King
Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817
