ALOHA KAKOU,

Pu`uhonua Kanahele, the Nation's Head of State, is still being held in
prison without bail by federal authorities, after the Ninth Circuit
Court in San Francisco denied his appeal in mid-September, in a split
decision (one judge dissented on a panel of three).

Kanahele's trial, which was originally scheduled for Oct. 3, has been
postponed by the court until Oct. 11, and perhaps later.

Updated information, including news articles (from Hawaii and
elsewhere), letters of support (including a statement from a trustee
of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs), letters to the editors, and
related information is available at:

HO`IKE I KA PONO - Witness for Justice

On August 31, over 40 church and community leaders visited the village
of Pu`uhonua O Waimanalo, as the first "Witness for Justice" exposure
tour, to learn first-hand about the imprisonment of Kanahele, and the
history and goals of the Nation of Hawaii.

This coalition has issued a statement calling for the release of
Kanahele, and is organizing a petition campaign to gather signatures
on Kanahele's behalf and to raise awareness regarding this injustice,
and also to seek support for the Kanaka Legal Defense Fund (see
below).

The Witness for Justice statement can be viewed at:

A second Witness for Justice tour of the Waimanalo village was held on
Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 11 am to 2 pm, when more church and community
leaders spent several hours learning about Kanahele's imprisonment and
the history and goals of the Nation.

KANAKA LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

A newly formed independent legal defense fund has been established in
coordination with the Hawaii Ecumenical Coalition (HEC) to support
legal and litigation issues which are not covered by more traditional
legal services or agencies, such as Kanahele's case. Your
contributions are urgently needed! Checks can be made out to the
Kanaka Legal Defense Fund, and can be specified to support Kanahele's
case. Address contributions to KLDF, c/o Kaumakapili Church, 766 N.
King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 97817. Contact Rev. Kaleo Patterson at
the HEC office (808-845-9501) for more information.

MEANWHILE...

With Kanahele in prison, the Nation of Hawaii continues to move
forward in developing the foundation for independence, and to engage
in the crucial issues of the day. For example...

HAWAII COALITION AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTING

The Nation of Hawaii is a member of the Hawaii Coalition Against
Nuclear Testing (HCANT), a broad-based group of churches,
organizations and individuals from Hawai`i and the Pacific who have
come together to join other Pacific nations and peoples to oppose the
French nuclear tests in Tahiti. The Nation has assisted in the
development of a new WWW site for HCANT, with information on local
Hawaii activities and links to many other anti-nuclear sites. The
HCANT site is still in development stages, but is up for viewing at:

"CEDED" LANDS DEMONSRATION

On Saturday, August 26, Na Kupuna O Maui of the Nation of Hawaii
hosted a peaceful demonstration in Lahaina/Kaanapali to stop the
selling, trading, and leasing of "ceded lands" in Hawaii. The State
of Hawaii's Attorney General recently issued a decision that the state
could sell "ceded lands" and thereby continue to disenfranchise Native
Hawaiians from their birthright. For information about this event and
a legal background on the issue of "ceded lands" (hint: there is no
such thing!), please visit:
