On Thursday, October 5, eleven recently returned Guatemalan refugees
preparing to celebrate the first anniversary of their return to Guatemala
were killed by an army patrol in the northern province of Alta Verapaz. On
October 8, the Minister of Defense, General Mario Enriquez Morales,
resigned in the face of widespread protest over the massacre.

On Thursday, October 12, at 12:00, the Guatemalan News & Information
Bureau, East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, and representatives of the Mayan
community will hold a vigil outside the Guatemalan Consulate in San
Francisco to denounce this latest act of violence by the Guatemalan army
against the indigenous citizens of Guatemala, and to call for more
effective civilian control over the armed forces.

Speaking at the vigil will be Ms. Lorena Robles, a representative of the
Guatemalan Federation of Food & Allied Workers who is currently on tour in
northern California. Ms. Robles is also a labor representative to the
Assembly of Civil Society, which has proposed thorough reforms in the
Guatemalan armed forces as a prerequisite for creating true democracy. Ms.
Robles will make a statement to the press and will be available to answer
questions at 12:30.

Mayan refugees currently residing in the Bay Area will also speak at the event.

Co-sponsored bye the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.
