Hi Bill, in your response to this you wondered if non-Natives would accept
art from Natives that didn't look like something from 300 years ago [did I
interpret that correctly?]. I don't know about the area that you live in
but in the Pacific Northwest not all people feel the need to create art
that their great-grandparents could have done. The Seattle Art Museum has
many pieces of art created along the lines of local tradition, but it also
has pieces by Native artists that are contemporary and not necessarily
recognizable as 'Native'. These artist's 'fine art' is acclaimed
nation-wide. I am out of the area for a couple months so I can't give you
any specific names, sorry. Many people here do create their pieces along
the destinctive traditional lines though, because that is what we grew up
with and the look and colours saturate our eyes manytimes. Some time
spent in art schools broadens the view.
Peace and good wishes towards your new life as Salinan artiste,
- Bhan
