CASA Volunteers

Hi everyone! I wanted to write about a volunteer training that I am
going through for CASA. CASA is a non-profit organization that advocates
for the child in/through the court system, if a child has been removed
from a home due to abuse or neglect.

In my volunteer class, there is definitely a lack of cultural diversity.
There are 4 people of color in the group. Considering I am in Texas,
that number is highly disproportionate to the number of children removed
from homes of people with color.

I would like to encourage everyone on the list, who has the time, to look
into becoming a volunteer in your area. It is traumatic enough for the
child to be removed from his/her own home, only to be placed in a foster
home that is far removed from that child's culture. Being a CASA
volunteer can be a bridge for that child to remain connected to his/her
own community.

If anybody wants more information, you can email me directly. And if you
are a volunteer, I would love to hear about your experiences in working
with the different agencies and courts.

Thanks!

Gin
