ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE ACTION ALERT!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congress is voting this week on the Budget Recon-
ciliation Act, which includes Medicare, welfare
reform and provisions for the oil industry to
develop the LAST 10 PERCENT OF THE ARCTIC COAST
OF ALASKA.

The coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge is 1.5 million acres of undisturbed arctic
ecosystem which is home to the 152,000-member
Porcupine River caribou herd, more polar bear
denning sites than the rest of the Arctic
coast of Alaska combined, wolf populations, brown
bears and - in summer - the nesting grounds of
more than 130 species of migratory birds.

Alaska's congressional delegation, Gov. Tony
Knowles and oil industry lobbyists have suc-
ceeded in hiding an Arctic Refuge oil drilling
provision in this vast budget document. It calls
for development and production in the core calv-
ing grounds of the Porcupine River caribou herd.
The Gwich'in indigenous peoples (Athabascan
Nation) of Interior Alaska and Northwest Canada
have lived in harmony with the caribou
for 1000 generations. Now their culutural iden-
tity and subsistence is threatened by the
dominant culture.

Please add your voice to those concerned about
the health of our Earth. We need a national
energy conservation policy, not drilling on the
coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge or another
war in the Middle East. Contact President Bill
Clinton and support his stated intent to veto
any legislation which might include developing
the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Please call
or FAX Congress.
