The results from the James Bay Cree referendum were announced in
Montreal yesterday, October 25, 1995. Today's Ottatwa Citizen carried
a front page story on the results. Of the eligble Cree voters, there
was a 77% turnout rate that voted 96% in favour of staying in Canada.
The Inuit hold their referendum today. Additional stories were
carried by the CBC and CTV networks news.

Quebec still insists that if the results from next Tuesday's
referendum is in favour of separation then all of Quebec will go,
including the Cree and Inuit lands which comprises about two-thirds of
the province's land base. This territory also includes the huge James
Bay Hydro-electric complex. After confederation in 1867, the federal
government made two land grants to the province, one in 1898 and the
other in 1912, to extend Quebec to its present borders. Quebec still
refuses to acknowledge or discuss the Cree's right to self-determi-
nation or their right to remain in Canada.

Federal government has not commented on whether or not that they will
recognize the results of the Cree vote.

I will continue to post updates on a daily basis until next Tuesday
morning. After that, I will be out of town and away from my computer
for a week.

A friend of mine forwarded the below. I haven't had a chance to check
them out yet but for those of you with a Web browser may be interested
in them as well. Apparently the Globe and Mail, "Canada's National
Newspaper", had soem good coverage yesterday on the Cree story.
