I think it is unlikely that White people taught Natives
about domestic violence. The traditional Western apache
punishment for unfaithful wives was to cut off the tip of
the nose of the offending woman; the Slave (or Slavey) group
of Athabascan speakers was given that name by Europeans for
the way men treated women. And Russell should certainly
know about domestic abuse, given what he did to his wife.
