You might look for the work of Gladys Tantaquidgeon to begin with.
Others who have published about this topic include Gordon Day, Frank
Speck, and myself, but there are lots of other sources out there. If you
are interested in medical uses of plants, check Dan Moerman's compilation
of plants used by Native Americans. It was published by the Museum of
Anthropology, University of Michigan. My dissertation has appendices
which compare plant uses I learned from people I talked with and those
from previously published sources including those dealing with New England.
It was published by the (then named) Museum of Man, National Museums of
Canada, Mercury Series. I don't know if it is still available from them,
but it is also on microfilm (Meredith Jean Black, University of Michigan,
1973).
