The Huichol reference to the eight-pointed star is one of depicting
peyote cactus. It is a segmented plant. The Huichol standardize the
segments into eight for artistic symmetry as well as culturally symbolic
reasons. You can see lots of peyote in their art. A good reference is
Peter Furst's The Art of Huichol. It was the work of Barbara Myerhoff and
Peter Furst that was allegedly purloined by Carlos Castaneda in his
fictional account of a Yacqui medicine man. If you wish to see the actual
photographs and text Castaneda allegedly used it is published by Cornell
University and is authored by Furst and Myerhoff and called Peyote Hunt.
