There was only one death. That of Anthony Dudley George. He was murdered by
an Ontario Provincial Police Special Tactics Officer. He was defending an
ancient burial ground on land which the provincial government had claimed as
a provincial park. It was adjacent to a larger former canadian military base
called Camp Ipperwash which was under negotiations to be returned when the
tragic incident happened. The people defending the park were primarily from
Stoney Point which was amalgamated with the Kettle Point people when the
land was taken for the base in the early 1940's. Negotiations for the return
of the military base are ongoing but no progress is being made on the return
of the provincial park to the people of Stoney Point. The federal negotiator
appointed has resigned saying he did not have the authority to negotiate for
the park. The federal goverment is pretending it is not their responsibility
and the provincial government is trying to pass the buck to the federal
government and still the issue remains unresolved. Charges have recently
been laid against two of the Stoney Point people who were in court last
week. I will try to get an update later this week.
