This is incorrect. Africans were brought to _British_ North America in
the late sixteenth-century (Raleigh's _Lost Colony_), and later to
Jamestown soon after its founding. However, the Spanish, who had
decimated Indian populations in the Caribbean very early on, started
_importing_ Africans in the sixteenth century. There were numerous
settlements of escaped Africans/natives/pirates living in the Western
Hemisphere prior to the seventeenth-century.
