Ableza: A Native American Arts & Film Institute, calls for exhibit slide
submissions. The exhibit, entitled "Warp" will premier November, 1996, at
the gallery of the Institute of Contemporary Art in San Jose, California.
This exhibit will contain the best artistic examples of authentic Native
American traditional weavings which make a contemporary statement.
Textiles (i.e., rugs, blankets, etc) beadwork, basketry, and pottery are
just a few traditional arts that can be implemented into weaving
contemporary art pieces. Native artists working in non-traditional media
are encouraged to apply, but all work chosen for exhibition must be woven
in some way.
Deadline for entries must be postmarked no later than June 15, 1996, to:

Submissions must include:
VISUAL ART WEAVINGS
1. Resume and/or vita of artist. Please include tribal affiliation.
2. No more than three slides of completed work.
3. A brief concept statement, traditional histories and techniques about
each contemporary piece depicted in the slides. Please, no more than one
short paragraph per slide.
LITERARY ARTS - STORY TELLING
1. Resume and/or vita of artist. Please include tribal affiliation.
2. Audio Cassette or VHS video tape of one traditional or contemporary
original story that is of the artist, artist's people or family,
copyrighted by the artist. The story must be told, not read, by the
artist-entrant. Literary artists will be selected to perform at intervals
during the visual arts exhibit. State name, tribal affiliation and
introduction that includes something about the origins and/or history of
the story submitted at the beginning of the tape. Story should be no
longer than twenty minutes and no shorter than ten minutes. Label both
sides of the tape with name, address and phone number.
3. A brief, legibly written concept statement about "words" being
"weaving" materials. Include signature, name and address on this
statement.
ALL SUBMISSIONS should include a self-addressed, stamped, insured return
envelope. Tapes or slides will not be returned without this item. Ableza
and/or ICA are not responsible for uninsured items lost in return mail.
Entrants will be informed of exhibit selection by August 31, 1996.
