American Water Spaniels & indigenous cultures

I am looking for any information on the role that the dog now known as the
American Water Spaniel played in lives of indigenous peoples from the 1800's
to the present. The breed is believed to have originated in the mid-1800's
in Fox and Wolf River valleys of Wisconsin, and reportedly was very popular
with Native Americans of this region.

Helpful information might include:

@ Contact information for any indigenous people who have owned (or whose
families have owned) American Water Spaniels
@ Sources of any publications, artwork, or personal photographs that
describe or depict the breed within the context of indigenous culture.
@ Names and addresses of any newsletters or newspapers in MN, WI, or MI
dedicated to indigenous topics, where I might advertise to find people who
have first-hand experience with the breed.
