Greetings to you from Wiyot Country. We are located about 86 miles south
of the Oregon border on the coast of California. We are approximately
272 miles north of San Francisco.

There will be a candlelight vigil for those people who died in a
massacre in 1860, 136 years ago. The massacre took place in the early
morning of February 26th. The small village was asleep, resting after
what we now believe was a seven day event, held in the evening called the
World Renewal, where all people were welcome. It was the start of our
new year. The village was called Tuluwat on an island in Humboldt Bay. The
island today is called Indian Island.

For the passed for years, we have been gathering on Woodley Island
because of the restrictions and the enability to get folks to the village
site. This year will be no different.

There are still bad feelings between the Native Americans and the
non-Indians. There needs to be a healing in this community and others
like it, where there has been similar sadness. Through this vigil I
believe the healing process can begin. This will be our fifth gathering,
with each year comes new awareness of ourselves and those around us.

At the vigil there will be a time of prayer and there will be those who
come and share their songs and poetry. The Humboldt State University Student
Drum participates as our anchor. We will hold the vigil rain or moonlight so
be prepared.
