I hope to be able to formulate and articulate a more specific policy and
perhaps to provide some means for questions to be asked and answered,
maybe by means of a new mailing list set aside specifically for that
purpose. Until such time as such a mechanism is found and implemented,
I would encourage those having such questions to try using the Usenet
newsgroups "soc.culture.native" or "alt.native" for that purpose. Also,
questions of an informal nature can be asked by means of the NATCHAT list,
to which you can subscribe by sending "subscribe natchat Your Name" to
"listserv@tamvm1.tamu.edu"
I feel a need to call on subscribers for help in a number of areas - one
of them being researching and writing a good "frequently-asked questions"
document. Perhaps when I return from my travels in another month, I can
create an "ad hoc" mailing list for the purpose of communication among
those who would like to help think through questions and answers for such
a document. I am getting lots of questions from people wanting to know
how to get BIA enrollment cards or how to research their Native heritage.
I am not equipped to handle such questions, but I know there are those of
you out there who are (in fact some of these questions have come up in the
past, and good articles are in the NATIVE-L archives - it's just a matter
of digging some of that information out and putting it into a format that
makes it convenient as reference material and/or creating Web indices
pointing to those articles in some cases).
Well, I have much to do between now and Monday, when I'm leaving for
California, so I have to close here. As I think I mentioned earlier, I
cannot guarantee that NATIVE-L and the other NativeNet lists will remain
operational during my absence, since my computer has been failing a lot
lately, as I think most of you know. I hope that I'll be able to start
working toward a more stable foundation for NativeNet after I return.
Finally, I'd like to pass on the following announcement of the conference
where I'll be speaking shortly. I apologize for not posting this announce-
ment sooner. (I should mention that most U.S. air carriers that service
Canada have some pretty good discounts for tickets purchased seven days in
advance right now - so it's still possible to get a good deal on travel to
Edmonton, which I understand is about forty miles from the conference site).
If anyone plans to go to this conference, please drop me a note and/or in-
troduce yourself at the conference itself (apologies to NAT-EDU subscribers,
who will have seen this announcement already, since I posted it to that list
yesterday). Again, the best address to use for me from Monday onward, since
mail sent here may get trapped until I return, is "gst@bioc02.uthscsa.edu"
(at the University of Texas).
Thanks to everyone for your understanding of my new policies. I see them
as being a temporary expedient, just to make things more manageable for
the time being.
Regards to you all,
Gary
