In a few hours I'll be departing for California, and will be gone for
a few weeks. I am going to attempt to keep things running remotely,
except for the NATCHAT list, which is being handled by Jay Brummett.
As I have said previously, since my machine has become unreliable, I
cannot guarantee that it will remain running during the three weeks
of my absence - so if you suddenly stop receiving articles, please
assume that the machine has failed and stop sending new articles. And
I would like to ask that you restrict yourself to posting what you feel
to be important articles during this period.
I have received messages from a number of people, some praising my
decision to limit questions being asked on NATIVE-L for the time being,
and some saying that many people do not live near a good library, so it
is important to be able to ask questions. Please understand that I hope
that this policy will only be temporary and that it will be possible to
permit questions in the not too distant future once again - initially via
NATIVE-L and probably later by means of a new list. To those who have
submitted articles containing questions, know that I want to try sending
out one or two articles containing a set of what I consider to be the more
important of these questions. The others I may have to hold for some time.
If any of my plan to re-structure things and create a channel for
questions is going to work, I am going to need to call on the NativeNet
community for help. I have come to a personal decision that I need to use
my energies somewhat differently than I have been for these past six
years, and I can no longer afford to shoulder the burden of doing all that
I have been doing. I need to branch out into some new areas and to find a
way to deal with my survival needs more effectively. I am willing to keep
things going to the best of my ability, but I'd like to change my role to
being that of a coordinator and overseer and technical support person with
regard to the mailing lists, and let others do more of the day-to-day
work. I need to put more energy into new developments that also have some
personal benefit to myself. I'm sure you can understand.
Anyway, I have lots more to do before I board the plane in a few hours,
so I'll close here with best wishes to you all. Your receipt of this
message will also be a confirmation that my remote moderation software
procedure is working properly, since I am going to route it through that
software as a test.
Again, if anyone has an important message to send me during the next few
weeks, please use the address "gst@bioc02.uthscsa.edu" - to make sure that
I receive it even if my machine does in fact fail.
Until next time...
Gary
