SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico (AP) -- Three armed men beat and
threatened to kill a Dominican nun working in Chiapas state, the site of a
2-year Indian rebellion.

The Mexico City newspaper La Jornada reported Saturday that the sister was
attacked while she was walking with two Indian children through a field in
the village of Ocosingo. An approaching vehicle frightened them off.

The nun did not require hospital treatment, the paper said.

Chiapas diocese leader Bishop Samuel Ruiz has been accused of siding with
leftist rebels, and has received death threats for defending the rights of
indigenous Mexicans in the region.

Catholic officials condemned the attack, fearing it might signal the
beginning of a campaign against pastoral workers.

The Zapatista National Liberation Army launched a brief, violent
insurgency in Chiapas two years ago, seeking greater autonomy for Mexico's
seven million Indians. The government and rebels still have not signed a
peace agreement.
