"The Mayan Indians of Guatemala," May 11-26, 1996 will expose you to the
culture and life circumstances of the Mayan Indians of Guatemala. The
Mayans have maintained a vibrant culture and a powerful spirituality in the
face of long-standing and violent repression. You will explore Mayan
social, cultural, and religious traditions and how they have been affected
by the military, economic, and environmental policies of the Guatemalan
government. The trip will include a visit to the spectacular Mayan ruins of
Tikal.
"Human Rights Travel/Study Seminar to Guatemala," June 1-9, 1996 will offer
you the opportunity to engage in the study of human rights, grounded in
international law, in a country with a long history of human rights abuses.
During the week-long study tour, you will review selected international
treaties; analyze the political problems of implementing and enforcing human
rights law; and experience firsthand the relevance of human rights law to
politics, culture, economics, and the environment. This program is in
conjunction with the St. Mary's University School of Law and intended for
law students, attorneys, human rights professionals or paralegals.
"The Mayan Alternative: Creating Political, Economic, and Cultural
Democracy," June 22 to July 2, 1996 will visit Chiapas and Western
Guatemala, examining how the Mayan culture is defining democracy in its
holistic sense (political, economic, and cultural).
"These programs emanated from the Center's interests to bridge commonalties
between the indigenous peoples of the U.S. with the Native peoples in
Guatemala and Chiapas," said Virginia Allery (Cree and Chippewa),
Co-Director of the Center for Global Education. The Center's programs in
Guatemala are coordinated by a staff member who is a member of the
Cakchiquel Mayan ethnic group.
The Center's international travel seminars are nationally known and
respected for exposing travelers to a variety of perspectives, especially
those of the poor and marginalized in the Two-Thirds World. Since 1982, the
Center has organized trips for more than 5,000 North Americans.
