LAS HOJAS EVICTION SUSPENDED DUE TO INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

February 8, 1996 - Because of extensive international attention and
response, the eviction of the Las Hojas cooperative of the National
Association of Indigenous Salvadorans (ANIS) did not take place
yesterday. Chief Esquino expresses his sincere gratitude for everyone
who acted and sent letters on behalf of ANIS.

The situation is not resolved at this time, however, because a repeal of
the eviction has not yet been issued, accenting to Margarito Esquino. It
is important for us all to remain vigilant, as human rights abuses are
continuous and removals could still happen at any time.

If you still have not done so, it is still extremely important to send
appeals demanding a repeal of removal orders for Las Hojas and Bola de
Monte, protection for ANIS's human rights, and punishment for the
Perpetrators of human rights abuses. Please send appeals to:

Dr. Armando Calderon Sol
President of the Republic of El Salvador
Casa Presidencial
San Salvador, El Salvador
FAX 503-27l-0950

We'll keep you updated on the situation. For more information, please contact
Gabrielle Tayac at tel/fax 301-495-2633 or if you speak Spanish, Margarito
Esquino at 202-332-7720. Thanks again.
