ARMY REMOVING INDIGENOUS SALVADORANS TODAY

RESPOND RIGHT NOW

At least four truckloads of army personnel are at the Las Hojas
Cooperative right now and are poised to forcibly remove the inhabitants.
They may have begun to do this already because as of 9:00 pm last night,
the army trucks were already there and "waiting for daybreak", according
to Chief Adrian Esquino Lisco.

The Las Hojas Cooperative, which suffered a massacre of 74 members in
February 1983, is a project of the National Association of Indigenous
Salvadorans. The Esquino family have been under recent attacks,
including death threats, rapes, murder of a baby, and firing on the
cooperatist homes. The Esquino family and other ANIS members have
suffered a series of escalating human rights violations, perpetrated by
armed men affiliated with the ARENA government.

Supporters of ANIS, including their lawyer, Carlos Alexi Portillo, and a
magistrate Carlos Solano, have also been receiving threats. Chief
Esqmno said last night: "I'm afraid they'll kill us all".

Please fax appeals stating that the eviction of Las Hojas must cease
immediately and human rights of all ANIS members and supporters must be
protected to:
