Youth Delegation to Chiapas & Guatemala

CELEBRATE TWO HISTORIC
INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S STRUGGLES
FOR JUSTICE, DIGNITY & PEACE

JOIN THE YOUTH DELEGATION TO
CHIAPAS, MEXICO & GUATEMALA
August 1-14, 1996

Though it has been over one hundred and fifty years since Mexico took the
state of Chiapas by force from Guatemala, the indigneous peoples on both
sides of the border remain linked by their heritage and their current
struggle for land, liberty and democracy.

One of the most important contributions you can make to the indigenous
struggles in Chiapas, Mexico and Guatemala is learn first hand about the
events in this region. As a member of the international community, your
presence in indigneous communities in the highlands of Chiapas and
Guatemala will send a strong statement to both the Mexican and Guatemalan
armies as well as private security forces that the international community
fully supports the indigenous struggles for land, liberty and democracy
and that these communities are not hidden from the eyes of the world.

The Youth Delegation will spend one week in Chiapas visiting indigenous
communities in the conflict zone, meeting with community leaders and
Mexican human rights activists and investigating eyewitness accounts of
human rights abuses in the region. The delegation will then travel to
Guatemala City and meet with human rights workers and community
organizers.

The Youth Delegation will also travel to the Guatemalan highlands to meet
with returning indigenous refugees who were displaced by military
oppression.

This is a special opportunity to witness revolutions in progress while
providing support for grassroots struggles for peace with justice and
dignity.
