ANOTHER HUMAN RIGHTS EMERGENCY IN EL SALVADOR

Chief Adrian Esquino Lisco called me tonight at 9:00 pm to inform me of a
serious situation that took place earlier this evening. At 5:30 pm, 10
Civil Police agents of the Sonsonate Police Force invaded the ANIS office.
The agents fired shots outside and inside the office.

The police severely beat two ANIS members who were in the office:
Antonio Armando Perez Arias and Rafael Arturo Perez Arias. Both men are
now being held at the Sonsonate Police Headquarters. The Chief of Police
is named Cados Antonio Acencio Jiron.

Another police officer, with the badge number 05246 stated that he
wanted to find Chief Adrian Esquino Lisco, presumably to arrest him or to
kill him.

Three armed men, in masks, are circling the Las Hojas cooperative. More
masked and armed men are currently inside the house of ANIS member
Domingo Antonio Contrera Morillo who lives in the community Censuhapan.

Please fax messages to President Armando Calderon Sol at 503-271-0950
or write to him at Casa Presedencial, San Salvador, El Salvador. Ask him
to ensure that all attacks by the Civil Police and any paramilitary groups
on ANIS will stop immediately. Thank you.
