I am posting this article on behalf of someone who needs to remain
anonymous. I really hope that subscribers to NATIVE-L and those who
read this article through other means will do what they can to learn
more about the matter and to express their opinions as recommended at
the end of the article. Also, please see the Web page I have set up:

http://bioc09.uthscsa.edu/natnet/archive/nl/penan-dayak.html

which refers to articles from the NATIVE-L archives (going back to 1991)
that provide information on the history and extent of the situation,
particularly as regards its effects on the Penan and Dayak indigenous
peoples of Sarawak.

If you know of NGO (non-governmental organizations) that could be
persuaded to become actively involved in this issue, please pass this
bulletin on to their directors.

Thanks.

THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BORNEO NEED YOUR HELP

The tribal people of Sarawak in Malaysia are currently demonstrating their
concern about human rights, indigenous and environmental issues over the
construction of the Bakun HEP dam in their homeland. The Malaysian govern-
ment, in dire need to meet its future energy demands, has given approval to
a local firm, Ekran Bhd, to start constructing this gigantic dam which will
not only displace the 10,000 or so tribal people from their homeland but
will also flood an ecologically rich virgin forest with an area about the
size of Singapore. Among the major issues are;

* the lack of public accountability of the Bakun HEP project
* alternative energy resources to Bakun HEP have not been fully surveyed
* lack of legitimate land rights to the tribal people
* promises of compensation and land reserves for resettlement

In their final and desperate attempt to stop the Bakun HEP project until
these critical issues are resolved, a group of the tribal people, with the
help of several NGOs in Malaysia, will be holding the "Bakun Solidarity
Nite" on April 10, 1996 in Kuala Lumpur whereby, amongst other things,
messages from concerned orgaizations or individuals worldwide will be read
at a public forum. You can act in a peaceful manner and show your support
by sending your message(s) via e-mail to Amate <amate@pactok.peg.apc.org>
or fax (603) 635 6602.
