WOMEN MAKE MOVIES is the leading non-profit distributor of films and
videotapes by and about women. The more than 400 titles in our collection
are used by thousands of educational, cultural and community based groups
across North America. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, New York
State Council on the Arts and such foundations as the McArthur Foundation,
our goal is to provide high quality independent media which explore new ways
of viewing women's lives.
Women Make Movies is particularly proud of its superb collection of films and
videos about the experiences of Native American women. Highlights include:
SONG JOURNEY - Arlene Bowman and Jeanine Moret's wonderful documentary which
takes Arlene on the pow-wow circuit in the hope of reviving her connection to
traditional Native culture.
HER GIVEAWAY - Carole Lafavor relates how she has come to terms with AIDS
by combining Native beliefs and healing practices with western medicine, by
Mona Smith.
IT STARTS WITH A WHISPER - Shelley Niro and Anna Gronau's touching and
evocative film follows a young woman who has grown up on a Reserve and her
decision about whether to follow a traditional or contemporary path in
life.
SWEATING INDIAN STYLE - The appropriation of Native American traditions by
non-Natives comes under scrutiny in this insightful documentary by Susan
Smith.
WILMA P. MANKILLER: WOMAN OF POWER - Mary Scott's profile of the first
woman chief of the Cherokee Nation.
HONORING OUR VOICES - Produced by the Native Counselling Services of
Alberta, six Native women of different ages and backgrounds talk about the
choices they have made to overcome the hardships of family violence and end
the cycle of abuse and silence.
