Gwinnett Council for the Arts is holding an event "Festival of Fires." This
event will honor the only American who has ever won the Gold Medal in the
10,000 meter, a Native American Billy Mills, Lakota Sioux. Billy's courage
and perseverance carried him to one of the exciting upsets in Olympic
history. Billy Mills' life story was the basis of a major motion picture
entitled "Running Brave", an exhilarating story about an individual's
relentless pursuit for excellence.
During the "Festival of Fires", Knifewing, the recipient of the 1995 Native
American Vocalist of the Year Award, will perform a song he co-wrote with
Beverly Newman, Navajo. The song "Warrior Spirit", was created out of
inspiration for Billy's shining moment, his quest for excellence, and was
written as a tribute to keep Billy's story alive. "Billy Mills is a great
inspiration to me and our Native American people. He is a man I am proud to
call Friend." Knifewing-Chiricahua Apache. Knifewing is the Founder and
Chairperson for Napa (Native American Performing Arts.) NAPA, P.O. BOX 1265,
