This morning, the first day of may 1996, two human beings locked down on
the main road leading into the Enola Hill cut. At five thirty they
locked down, one on the gate and one on the axle of a Forest Service jeep.

Their direct action delayed the loggers, who sat confused on the side of
the road at the entrance, and pulled in a swarm of police.

At seven a.m. the gate was cut in two with an acetylene torch and the
loggers drove up to the cut site. Fifteen minutes later a crew with saws
removed the man underneath the jeep.

Both men were then taken to jail for passively resisting the illegal
action of those who are cutting the trees on the Enola Hill sacred ground.

Within twenty minutes of the loggers entering through the torched gate we
heard the whirr of the chainsaw and then the crack of one more of our old
growth timber falling.

The log truck entered and a truck carrying landing gear for helicopters.

The natives of this land, that is to say all of us, brown skin and white,
are being robbed of our forests, of their complexity and their beauty.

Please do not remain silent, do not allow those men to have acted in vain.
This morning the delay of the loggers saved a few trees from imminent
destruction, however the chainsaws are biting as I write.

Act now, please.
What is occuring at Enola Hill is not necessary.
Thank you.

sincerely, a human being for sense
