Brazil: threats to Parana Indians

CIENCIA HOJE (SCIENCE TODAY), Brazil's largest and most respected
scientific magazine in circulation published today:

JUNE 5, 1996, a 10 page full color article with photos entitled
Quase Foram Extintos. Agora Estco Voltando a Sua Terra (Nearly
Extinct. They are Now Returning to their Lands) The article,
written by Anthropologist Stephen Schwartzman provides a
comprehensive historical and present day accounting of the Panara
Indians who faced extreme adverse conditions with absolute
strength and determination to re create what was almost a lost
tribe.

Stephen Shwartzman, currently completing a year with the Instituto
Socl, returns in July to the Environmental Defense Fund where he
has worked for close to ten years.
