Global Exchange Mexico Program

GLOBAL EXCHANGE SEEKS MAIN COORDINATOR FOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM IN CHIAPAS

BACKGROUND:

Global Exchange's Mexico Program seeks to support Mexico's democratic
movement by educating the US public about the realities of Mexico and the
need for changes in US policy as well as by providing direct support to
local efforts at peacemaking and democratic change in Mexico. At the
invitation of Bishop Samuel Ruiz and the Fray Bartolome Human Rights Center,
we established a permanent volunteer presence in Chiapas by opening a Peace
Center in San Cristobal de las Casas in February 1995. Volunteers, working
through the center, have played an important role in observing and reporting
on human rights abuses, supporting local non- governmental organizations
(NGOs), and serving in Civilian Peace Camps located in indigenous villages
in areas of Chiapas occupied by the Mexican Army. The Peace Center also
serves as a base for monthly human rights delegations from the U.S. These
delegations play the dual roles of supporting the work of Mexican activists
and educating a core of U.S. citizens who can help to make change in this
country upon their return.
