In early World War II the U S Army acquired by public land order what had
been part of the Eklutna Indian Reserve near Anchorage, Alaska, the Village
not objecting because of appeals to patriotism and promises the land would
be returned after the war, which of course it was not.
We obtained Federal legislation permitting the Eklutna corporation, the
municipality of Anchorage, and the State of Alaska to reach agreement on
the future of the Fort with binding effect on the military, and such an
agreement in fact was reached. The Eklutna corporation was holding hostage
some land deeply desired by the city and the state, which of course helped
tremendously.
Now let us see whether and when the expansion of Anchorage forces the
military out, and whether then this agreement will become yet another
broken treaty, or will deliver to the Dena'ina the new suburbs of Anchorage.
As always, pray for the People.
