SUICIDE REPORT OUT ON TUESDAY
Chronicle Journal Thunder Bay Ontario July 19, 1996

The final report of the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation's youth forum on suicide will
be released Tuesday by the moose Cree First Nation in Moose Factory. The
report is significant not only for the issue it addresses, but for the way
First Nations peoples investigated the problem. Traditionally, decisions
are made by leaders and elders. Because of the high rate of suicides among
young people in aboriginal communities, NAN leaders decided to form a
committee of young people to recommend ways to prevent more deaths. The
study, which has taken several years to complete, has involved meetings,
information sessions and training with hundreds of native and non-native
people in Northern Ontario.
