On Friday the 6th day of September, 1996 the family will be holding their
first annual Memorial Feast in remembrance of Dudley.
Due to various issues, members of the Dudley George family have had to
cancel any plans for a two-day Gathering and are opting for a Memorial
Gathering.
However the George family will continue fund raising, with plans for a
Memorial Gathering next year.
A pot luck feast will be held on the 7th day of September, 1996,
at 12 p.m., at the Kettle Point Park.
Preliminary plans would include a traditional gathering which includes
drumming, dancing and singing. Tee shirts will be for sale and
donations will be received.
Vendors Welcome.
Everyone R.S.V.P.

Comments from NativeNet listowner, Gary Trujillo (gst@gnosys.svle.ma.us):
The following text is from an article posted by "adixon@web.apc.org" on
Monday, 18 September 1995. It gives background information that explains
who Dudley George is and why he is now being memorialized:
| Shooting Death of Native Man In Confrontation With Police
|
| On Monday Sep 4, a group of native people (the "People of Aazhoodena")
| occupied Ipperwash provincial park near Sarnia, Ontario. On Wednesday,
| Sep 6, one of the occupiers, Anthony O'Brien "Dudley" George was killed
| and two others injured when shot at by the Ontario Provincial Police
| (OPP). This precipitated a major stand-off that occupied the national
| media's attention over the following week. On Wednesday, Sep 13 a
| meeting between Federal politicians and native leaders achieved a
| memorandum of understanding that dealt with some of the issues involved,
| and the situation appears to be returning to "normal" (i.e. out of the
| public eye)...
