Subject: URGENT WARD VALLEY NUKE DUMP IN SENATE

HI --

-------------- Enclosure number 1 ----------------
Friday, Sept. 6, 1996 URGENT WARD VALLEY ALERT:

Senator Murkowski (R,AK) has two Ward Valley Land Transfer amendments which
he is planning to amend to the Interior Appropriations Bill on the Senate
floor, possibly as soon as the week of September 9th. (Similar attempts in
both House and Senate can be expected until the House and Senate adjourn in
early October.) The amendments will transfer federal Bureau of Land
Management land to the State of California, for a radioactive waste dump.
The transfer would occur regardless of the outcome of ongoing environmental
testing, the Dept. of Interior's Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement
process, despite clear opposition on cultural, spiritual, health and
economic grounds of the five Native American Nations that would be directly
impacted. It also sacrifices the threatened desert tortoise species for whom
Ward Valley is prime critical habitat.

Contact your Senators to OPPOSE the WARD VALLEY LAND TRANSFER in any form--

(as S. 1596, as the Murkowski Amendments to Interior
Appropriations or any other bill)
