URGENT WARD VALLEY ALERT-SENATE VOTE

On Tuesday Sept 17, 1996 at 9:30AM, Senator Murkowski (R,AK) is
expected to introduce amendments to the Interior Appropriations
bill (HR 3662) on the floor of the US Senate which:

Force the transfer of the Ward Valley land from the US Bureau
of Land Management to the State of California for a nuclear
waste dump;

Bail out US Ecology, the nearly bankrupt company that would
operate the dump;

Exempt the transfer from all federal laws including
environmental and land management laws;

Exempt it from judicial review;

Misleadingly assure Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) oversight
and protection even though NRC has deferred that authority to
the state which already has licensed the burial project;

Violate Native American spiritual and religious rights and
agricultural, water, economic and development rights.

ACTION NEEDED:

A filibuster against the Murkowski amendments is expected. Contact your
US SENATORS and ask them to oppose the amendments and to VOTE AGAINST
CLOTURE, in other words, to let the filibuster continue. Please call,
e-mail and/or fax your Senators today. Capitol Switchboard,
202-224-3121 or TOLL FREE, 1-800-962-3524.
