50 000 years of life were lost to First Peoples in the Northern Territory
during the period 1979-1991.
The cream of living was taken away from First Peoples as a result of the
occupation of their living countries by Anglo-Australia.
Additionally, we must ask what sort of living conditions prevail for those
who did not actually die, but remained on the side of the living. Life as
struggle, that is for sure since the actual deaths are the tip of a terrible
'iceberg.'
A shocking truth is captured by this finding by the Menzies School of
Health Research in Darwin.
PREMATURE MORTALITY
These figures come from a study just published in The Medical Journal of
Australia (16 September 1996, Volume 165, number 6) by Joan Cunningham and
John R Condon. It is entitled 'Premature mortality in Aboriginal adults in
the Northern Territory, 1979-1991.'
