BISHOP DENIED BAIL ON APPEAL OF CONVICTION
Vancouver (Canadian Press) September 17, 1996

Roman Catholic Bishop Hubert O'Connor, sentenced to 2 1/2 years for sex
crimes dating back three decades, will be in custody for at least several
months before his appeal is heard. Justice Patricia Proudfoot of the B.C.
Court of Appeal denied him bail Monday. She cited concerns about how to
best serve the public interest. O'Connor was sentenced Friday and spent
the weekend in jail. His lawyer, Chris Considine, said he was not
surprised by Monday's decision. O'Connor was convicted in July of rape
and indecent assault, now classified under sexual assault in the Criminal
Code. The assaults on two women happened while he was head of a native
school near Williams Lake, B.C., 30 years ago. The victims were teenagers
at the time.
