Dear ELANeros,

The Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research (ACEER)
Foundation will be sponsoring in November 1997 in Iquitos, Peru an
international forum on the role of indigenous women in rainforest
conservation. The forum is envisioned as a mechanism for rural women
in Amazonia to meet with their counterparts from other parts of Latin
America and others throughout the world to explore the changing nature
of their roles in families, education, local economy and natural
resources decision-making; an important aspect will be the delineation
of incentives/disincentives associated with the empowerment of local
women in conservation. The forum will, hopefully, provide an
opportunity for local women as well as prefessionals involved in women's
studies and/or Latin American studies to interact. The ACEER
Foundation, and its Environmental Advisory Board, will be organizing the
sessions and developing the itinerary for the forum; it is still in the
planning stages and participation/co-sponsorship by other institutions,
ngo's, etc with mutual interest is welcome, as are the advice and
recommendations of all ELANeros.
