EMERGENCY PUBLIC MEETING

STOP THE FURTHER DESECRATION OF ABORIGINAL HERITAGE

HELP CREATE A MEMORIAL TO ABORIGINAL HEROES ON THE DAY OF MOURNING SITE

For the last four years we have been fighting to save the site of the Day
of Mourning Conference, now the Cyprus-Hellene Club building, 150-152
Elizabeth Street, Sydney.

On 20 September 1996 the Minister for Planning, Craig Knowles, issued a
News Release announcing his decision to allow re-development of the site
subject only to retention of the facade and certain other minimal
conditions. This decision ignores the report from the Commission of
Inquiry, in which Commissioner Simpson made an unequivocal recommendation
for a Permanent Conservation Order on the building as an entity.

The National Aboriginal History and Heritage Council lodged a complaint to
the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) against this
decision under the Racial Discrimation Act. An interim decision on this
complaint is expected this Friday, 18 October 1996

There will be a public meeting this coming Monday, 21 October 1996 to
discuss the next steps which should be taken at legal, political and other
levels including consideration of what action is needed to make a bid to
purchase the building to establish an Aboriginal History Centre.

We would value your presence at this meeting to give us your moral support
and advice. If you are not able to attend this meeting personally, we
would appreciate a message of support and any suggestions you may be able
to provide.
