Kohl going to Indonesia:
Support East Timorese Peace Nobel prize winner -
No German weapons for Dictator Suharto !

In the view of the Society for Threatened Peoples German Chancellor Helmut
Kohl should urge the Indonesian government to consent to a referendum on
the future of East Timor. "The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the East
Timorese Bishop Belo and Jose Ramos Horta is a resounding slap in the face
for Indonesia's dictator Suharto, who is responsible for genocide of 200000
East Timorese," declared GfbV speaker for Asia (?) Ulrich Delius. German
politics have only encouraged the Indonesian Government so far to continue
the illegal (?) occupation of the part of the island and the violent
suppression of the East Timorese people. Despite of urgent appeals by
human rights organizations and by the former colonial power Portugal
Germany is supplying weapons to the dictatorial regime in Jakarta now as
ever and thus gets implicated (?) in the genocide in East Timor. Kohl
should apologize publicly to the Nobel Peace Prize winners and stop the
arms supplies.

Today Indonesia is the most important customer of German military goods
in South East Asia. Between 1990 and 1993 alone Indonesia imported
weapons to the value of one billion (1,000,000,000 ?) Deutschmarks
from Germany. The supplies comprise among other things speed boats,
helicopters, submarines, landing boats (?), military trucks,
minesweepers, battle suppliers (?), shore protection boats (?),
torpedos, and ammuntion of any kind.

In "my" German version of this text I missed one broken hyphenation:

> Ruestungsgueter in Suedostasien. Allein zwischen 1990 und 1993
> importierte Indonesien Waffen im Wert von mehr als einer Milliarde
----
would be right...

Uwe has also sent the following bulletin on the same subject:

I have just found some more text on yesterday's Gfv text. You will
find it at:

The (english!! off course!!) text comes from a discussion list
"German News" both in English and German and was published on Oct. 11th.

Chancellor Kohl to talk turkey about civil rights in Indonesia

When visiting Indonesia, Chancellor Kohl is to talk turkey as far as
human rights are concerned, according to a resolution passed by
opposition parties and civil rights groups. Politicians of the SPD and
the Alliance 90/Greens parties asked for that in a reaction to the
award of the Nobel Peace Prize. Two East Timor residents were awarded
the prize recently. East Timor used to be a Portuguese colony, and
recently some refugees making it into local embassies were granted
Portuguese passports and flights to Portugal. The society for peoples
at risk asked the chancellor to put an immediate stop to military
aid for Indonesia. Chancellor Kohl will visit Indonesia while
travelling to Asia from 25 October to 2 November. He also plans to
visit the Philippines and Japan.
