NEWS RELEASE FFROM NORTH CENTRAL MINNESOTA NATIVE AMERICAN VETERANS
OUTREACH AND RESOURCE CENTER:

The Leech Lake RBC canceled a public hearing on the MCT/TEC censure of
Secretary/Treasurer Daniel Brown, convicted in federal court of
misappropriation of tribal funds.

In a 'special' meeting, in the absence of Tribal Chairman Eli Hunt, the RBC
issued another illegal resolution and scheduled a RECALL ELECTION for
October 22.

This recall election, is another stall tactic in order for the RBC to keep
Brown in office until after January 1st, when they can appoint (rather than
elect) a replacement for Brown.

Oct. 16, 1996 Statement issued by the Leech Lake General council:

We, The Leech Lake Reservation General Council, do not concur with the
Leech Lake Reservation Business Committee's decision to have a recall
election instead of acting on the removal of Daniel Brown. Mr. Brown is a
convicted felon and should not be legally in office. Mr. Brown is also on
House Aresst and cannot leave his home - only to go to the hospital or
church. Therefore, Daniel Brown cannot perform his job or duties as
Secretary/Treasurer of the Leech lake Reservation Business committee. When
you go to the polls on Octover 22, 1996, the ballot will read:

"RECALL ELECTION
Should Daniel S. Brown, elected to the office of Secretary/Treasurer of the
leech lake Reservation Tribal Council, be removed from office?
______ Yes, he should be removed.
______ No, he should not be removed"

We, The Leech lake Reservation General Council, recommend that you vote
"Yes, he should be removed."

A "yes" vote will be a vote to restore our government. A government that
can be open, honest and responsive to the needs of our people.
