An important meeting was held in Port Moresby, hosted by the Foundation
for the Peoples of the South Pacific. It was a meeting of forest
stakeholders to discuss the role of Forest Stewardship Certification in
Papua New Guinea. The meeting took place between the 29 and 31 of October
1996.

The meeting was attended by ngos, small timber mill operators, landowners,
foresters. The Forest Industry Association (loggers) attended for some of
the time. The National Forest Authority was represented by its highland
regional manager (the Highlands Region does not have significant logging).
SGS also attended.

The meeting resloved to support FSC certification in Papua New Guinea. It
also designed and put in place a process to enable the FSC principles to
be adapted to Papua New Guinea conditions.
