The English practiced methods of racist oppression also on the Irish
before transplanting their methods to the "colonies." For an excellent
analysis check out _The Invention of the White Race_ (the author's name
escapes me at the moment). This book also analyzes how a people once
oppressed in their homeland became "white," the oppressors in their
adopted land.
