We have received the following request for help to save endangered funding
that can be used for cultural/historic preservation efforts, among other
things. Help in the form of information is requested by DECEMBER 12TH,
1996, which information will be used to provide examples of ways this
funding is valuable and should not be cut.

Subject: ISTEA enhancement reauthorization
To: refulton@mtu.edu

The ISTEA - Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act - is up for
reauthorization. There is a strong effort on the part of departments of
transportation to get rid of the 10% set-aside for enhancements, including
historic preservation and trail funding.

Anecdotal confirmation exists that these enhancements have made a big
contribution to preservation. I have offered to compile specific examples
which the National Park Service, which is the lead federal agency for
historic preservation, can use in presenting testimony for the retention
of the set- aside. Access and interpretation of cultural resources as
well as bricks-and-mortar projects would be useful to note.

Examples of how it has made a difference will be very important. Please
help by sending the following information:

Name of area that has benefited:

Tribe(s) benefited:

NHL?

Battlefield?

Cooperating group? Name of group(s)

Which category of enhancement was used?

How was the money spent?

How was matching money raised?

to me: Susan_Escherich@nps.gov by December 12.

I'm sorry there is such short turn-around time.

If you or anyone you know (tribal preservation officers?) is interested in the
preservation of cultural resources you and they are invited to join an on-line
discussion group on all aspects of this subject. To subscribe, send an e-mail
to
Majordomo@web.cr.nps.gov

Type

Send the message. You will receive an acknowledgement.

Also, could you put an announcement of the National Park Service Cultural
Resources web site in PATHWAYS? The address is: http://www.cr.nps.gov. It
contains a great deal of information on federal preservation activity,
including standards and guidelines, tribal and other grants, tax credits for
rehabilitation of historic property, etc. Thanks!
