I spent almost two hours viewing about 150 pieces of art from the Plains
tribes and if I had not had a previous uncancellable appointment, I would
have remained longer.
A catalog with illustrations of the drawings in color is available for
purchase from The Drawing Center (Hard cover $60 and soft cover $45) but the
printed page does not come near refelecting the crispness, color intensity
and overall quality of the original works.
Most of the paintings reflect the culture, historical events, or affects of
acculturation of the times. Several of the works were done by POWs at Fort
Marion or during early days in Oklahoma.
There is no fee for the exhibit and I highly recommend it to anyone in the
New York area. The exhibit will be in New York only until December 21.
The exhibit will be at the Milwaukee Art Museum in Milwaukee,Wisconsin from
January 21 -March 30th. From there it moves to the Joslyn Art Museum in
Omaha, Nebraska from April 26-July 13. Its final destination is at the
Frick Art Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from August 7-October 19 1997.
