FIVE POINT POSITION STATEMENT
The ABC radio reports that Aboriginal leaders meeting in Cairns have come
up with a five point position statement in connection with Wik.
While not having the exact wording of the statement, the gist is:
1. No extinction of native title
2. No amendment of the Racial Discrimination Act
3. Proposed amendments to the Native Title Act to be delayed (for further
consultation)
4. Negotiation and agreement to be the way ahead
5. Respect for the decision of the High Court.
The report also said that the stakeholders meeting in Cairns had been
unable to form a united front between Aboriginal people, miners and
pastoralists.
Several non-government politicians (Kernot, Melham, Beattie - Qld) are to
attend for a debriefing today.
