The Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center is seeking a Director
of Public Programs for the largest Native American owned and managed
institution of its kind. Scheduled to open in June of 1998, the 305, 000
square foot research center will feature 130,000 square feet of permanent
indoor and outdoor exhibits depicting the tribe's history, culture and
changing ways of life. Located on the Pequot reservation in southeastern
Connecticut, the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center will house
a 150,000 volume adult and 10,000 volume children's library, print and
electronic archives, photoarchives, visiting scholars wing, 5000 square
foot changing exhibitions gallery, 400 seat auditorium, 5 classrooms,
ethnographic and archaeological collections, conservation laboratory,
restaurant and gift shop. The Director of Public Programs will develop
innovative educational programs for a tribal community as well as a large,
predominantly non-Native visiting public. A demonstrated ability in
long-range program planning, managing and budgeting, writing and
administering grants, and establishing collaborative partnerships with
Native and non-Native cultural and educational institutions is required.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. or equivalent and at least 10 years experience in
museum education/ public programming. Knowledge of Native American history
and culture and proficiency in managing a large staff of teachers and
