30 Nahuat families from the Hacienda Santa Julia, all members of the
Salvadoran National Indigenous Organization (ANIS), were violently thrown
off their land on February 1, 1997. Included in the morning violence were
some 500 members of the National Civil Police, together with Judge Carlos
Alfredo Castro and other government representatives. Accompanying the force
were also Salvadoran firemen, the Salvadoran Red Cross, and 2 large trucks
without license plates. Shortly after the police started to remove the
inhabitants from their land, they began to use tear gas. The police then
filled the trucks with the Nahuat families, taking them to a place still
unknown. While this was happening, other agents destroyed all of the
residences and burned the houses to the ground. In the process, one family
alone lost 1300 colones (the Salvadoran currencly) and 3 geese.
Given the severity of the situation, SAIIC, along with ANIS, is asking
concerned organizations and individuals to send letters to the Salvadoran
government asking for the following:
a) That the human righs of the Indigenous peoples of El Salvador be respected.
b) That the land of the Hacienda Santa Julia, of the canton las Hojas, be
returned to its rightful owners, the Nahuat familes who were violently
thrown off their land
c) That the Salvadoran government look into the well being of the 30
families who were removed from the Hacienda Santa Julia.

Dear Mr. President,
We would like to make it known that we are concerned about the 30
Nahuat families that have been violently thrown out of their residences in
the Cooperative of Las Hojas, Sonsonate.
Seeing that Central American governments are in a process of peace
dialogues, it is a travesty that grave human rights violations are still
commonplace - including Indigenous families being thrown off their lands.
We ask that you please return the stolen lands to the Nahuat people
and look into their currently well being. We also would like to emphasis
the importance that Indigenous peoples' rights be respected in El Salvador.
We await word of your help in this urgent matter.

ACCION URGENTE: DESALOJO DE 30 FAMILIAS INDIGENAS NAHUAT DE SUS TIERRAS
Treinta familias indigenas Nahuats, miembros de ANIS (Asociacion
Nacional Indigena Salvadorenia) de la Hacienda Santa Julia, Canton las
Hojas fueron desalojados violentamente con gases lacrimogenos de sus
tierras el 1 de febrero. Ese dia por la maniana llegaron 500 hombres de la
Policia Nacional Civil junto con el Juez Carlos Alfredo Castro, delegado
departamental de la Procuraduria para la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos,
Josue David Venegas y la Fiscal Mercedes Quezada. Tambien se hacian
acompaniar de los cuerpos de Bomberos, Cruz Roja Salvadorenia y 2 camiones
de 10 toneladas sin placas. Poco despues, la policia procedio el desalojo
de los habitantes amenazandolos con usar gases lacrimogenos. La policia
comenzo a cargar los camiones con las pertenencias de cada familia;
llevandolos a lugares desconocidos. Al momento del desalojo, los agentes
destruyeron las viviendas e incendiaron el terreno, desapareciendo tambien
la cantidad de mil trescientos colones y tres gansos de la vivienda de una
familia.
Ante esta situacion pedimos escriban cartas a las autoridades del
gobierno de El Salvador exigiendo lo siguiente:
a) Que se respeten los Derechos Humanos de las Poblaciones Indigenas en El
Salvador.
b) Que la tierra de la Hacienda Santa Julia, canton las Hojas, sea devuelta
a sus verdaderos duenios, los indigenas Nahuat, miembros de ANIS.
c) Que el gobierno salvadore?o se compremete asegurar el bienestar de las
30 familias Nahuat que fueron desalojadas desde la Hacienda Santa Julia.

Respetable Sr. Presidente,
Queremos hacerle conocer que estamos consternados con la noticia
del desalojo de trienta familias indigenas Nahuat miembros de ANIS de la
Cooperativa Las Hojas, Sonsonate.
Viendo que los gobiernos de Centro America estan dialogando por la
paz, es una travestia que todav?a graves violaciones de desalojar a
familias indigenas de sus propias casas estan pasando.
Los actuales ocupantes de la cooperativa de ANIS son los legitimos
duenios y miembros de ANIS. Por lo tanto creemos que se estan usando
argucias legales para desalojarlos de lo que les pertenece, cuando en
realidad tiene un trasfondo politico, pues los hermanos de ANIS no se han
prestado al juego politico de algunos miembros del partido gobernante.
Durante este anio vemos que se siguen cometiendo violaciones en
contra de indigenas Nahuats en esta region, lo cual deberia ser
inadmisible. Le exigimos de nueva cuenta que su gobierno haga justicia
devolviendo las tierras a las treinta familias Nahuats. Estaremos siguiendo
de cerca todo este proceso. Quedamos en espera de su pronta respuesta en
apoyo a los derechos humanos de los indigenas Nahuat de ANIS.
