Protecting Lakota Religion & Sacred Sites: A Legal Perspective

John LaVelle*, a Santee Sioux and University of South Dakota law
professor, is the leading legal expert regarding preservation of Sioux
sacred sites. He addresses obstacles Native Americans face in protecting

EXHIBITIONS

Vision Quest: Men, Women and Sacred Sites of the Sioux Nation
Jan. 28-Mar. 26, 1997, Free
Large format Cibachrome prints by Don Doll, S.J., with text and
interactive CD-ROM, document the great Sioux nation of today. Doll is a
Jesuit priest and well-known photographer, with work in National
Geographic and several of the "Day in the Life of..." books.

Focus Exhibit: Native American Stereotypes
Jan. 28-Mar. 26, 1997, Free
This display examines Native American stereotypes in print media, product
packaging, and other instruments of mass communication and is the work of
SCU Communications class Minorities and media, taught by Moira
McLoughlin, Ph.D.

How to get to Santa Clara University
> From U.S. Highway 101, take the De La Cruz Boulevard/Santa Clara exit and
follow the signs to El Camino Real and the main campus entrance.
> From I-280, take I-880 north toward Oakland to The Alameda exit. Turn
left onto The Alameda (which becomes El Camino Real) to the main campus
entrance.
> From I-880, take The Alameda exit, travel north (The Alameda becomes El
Camino Real) to the main campus entrance.

How to get to the de Saisset Museum
Turn into the main entrance of the campus. You will be heading straight
toward the Mission Church. The museum is the first building on the right
hand side, immediately before the Mission.
