URGENT ACTION BULLETIN: RCMP MOVE GUSTAFSEN LAKE LAWYER.
Bruce Clark will be flown away from Vancouver into the interior, probably
to Williams Lake or 100Mile House tomorrow. The intention is to bring him
before the same BC Provincial Court Judge Friesen - that in September 1995
presided over a locked courtroom, denied Clark access to his Gustafsen Lake
clients, had RCMP and Sheriffs officers brutalize Clark, cited him for
contempt of Court and ordered him arrested. Subsequently he ordered him
into a compulsory psychiatric confinement for `examination.' Clark was
found fit to stand trial but instructed to flee into exile by his clients.
He had been in touch with Crown Counsel and arranged to return to appear
so that he could present the jurisdictional arguments underpinning the
Gustafsen Lake struggle. It would appear that he was `set up'.
The fact that Judge Friesen will now hear his own contempt and assault
charge - in effect acting as judge, jury , prosecutor, and executioner is
unorthodox in most jurisdictions but not in `Brazil North.'
The ongoing political persecution of this outstanding and highly respected
legal scholar and lawyer-- as well as the continuing denial of the Gustafsen
Lake Defenders'counsel of choice - can only be countered by strong protests.
Clark will be taken to the RCMP district commanded by Superintendent
Len Olfert, who is alleged to have made death threats and instructed his
subordinates to "smear the prick and everyone around him". Sergeant Montague
RCMP media liaison that has been delegated to the Clark story, has stated
that : "smear campaigns are my specialty."
Please act to defend Dr. Bruce Clark and the Gustafsen Lake defenders.
