NATIVE RIGHTS LAWYER DR. BRUCE CLARK BEING HELD IN PRINCE GEORGE

Native rights lawyer and legal scholar Dr. Bruce Clark, jailed for
three months by BC provincial court judge Nick Friesen, is being held in a
remote provincial remand centre. The maximum security institution is
located in Prince George, in northern BC.
Clark will attempt to appeal the 3 month jail term based on
numerous irregularities in what appears to be a politically motivated
attempt to prevent Clark appearing for his Gustafsen Lake clients, who
were expecting him to act as counsel in their defence. In addition the
move may be connected to a Supreme Court of Canada case involving the
secession of the province of Quebec. Clark successfully won Intervenor
status on behalf of the Indigenous Mi'gmaq Nation.
Revelations of RCMP death threats and a smear and misinformation
campaign directed at both Clark and his clients, including the jailed
Shuswap elder Wolverine, have prompted supporters to call for
international action on their behalf. During the 1995 Gustafsen Lake
standoff, BC's New Democratic Party government rejected calls for
international observers; BC Attorney General Ujjal Dosanjh stated that
"there shall be no alien intervention in the affairs of this state."
